Pet-Friendly RV Parks in Texas: What to Look For

If you travel with a dog or cat, you already know the drill: call ahead, check the pet policy, ask about breed restrictions, and hope the park actually means it when they say "pet friendly."

Not all RV parks that claim to be pet-friendly are created equal. Here's what to look for when you're booking a stay in Texas — and what you can expect at Double Time RV Park in Alvin.

Some parks technically allow pets but make it clear they'd rather you didn't bring them. Tiny designated pet areas, strict breed bans, excessive fees, and vague rules enforced inconsistently are all signs of a park that's pet-tolerant at best.

A genuinely pet-friendly park has:

• Clear, reasonable rules that apply equally to everyone
• Enough space for dogs to move around without being on top of neighbors
• No punitive per-pet fees stacked on top of your site rate
• Staff who actually like animals

Many parks ban "aggressive breeds" — a category that varies wildly by park and often includes pit bulls, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Dobermans regardless of temperament. If you have a large or mixed-breed dog, ask specifically before you book.

Most parks allow 2 pets per site. Some allow more with advance notice. If you're traveling with three dogs or a dog and two cats, confirm before you arrive.

Some parks charge a one-time pet fee or a nightly per-pet surcharge. Know what you're paying before you commit.

Virtually every RV park requires leashes in common areas. The question is whether the rule is enforced. A park where dogs run loose is a park where your leashed dog gets rushed by off-leash dogs — not a great situation.

Your dog needs to go somewhere. A park with no grass, no designated area, and gravel everywhere is technically functional but not comfortable for a long stay.

If you have a dog that barks, you need to know the quiet hours and whether they're enforced. Conversely, if you have a quiet dog, you want to know whether your neighbors' dogs will be an issue.

Cats are generally easier than dogs in RV parks — they stay inside, don't need walks, and don't bark. Most parks that allow pets allow cats without issue. A few things to keep in mind:

• Outdoor cats: Some parks prohibit outdoor cats or require them to be on a leash or in an enclosure. If your cat goes outside, ask.
• Litter boxes: Dispose of litter in trash receptacles, not on the ground.
• Escape risk: New environments stress cats. Make sure your rig is secure before opening doors.

Texas summers are brutal for pets. If you're staying in Texas from May through September, your dog needs shade, fresh water, and limited outdoor time during peak heat hours (10 AM–4 PM). Never leave a pet in a vehicle in Texas summer heat — temperatures inside a parked car can reach 140°F within minutes.

The Alvin area has wildlife that can be dangerous to pets: coyotes, water moccasins, and fire ants are all present. Keep dogs on leash, watch where they step, and don't let them roam near water at dawn or dusk.

Texas has one of the highest heartworm rates in the country. If your dog isn't on heartworm prevention, start before your trip. Year-round prevention is recommended for dogs spending time in Texas.
