Saltwater Fishing
Chocolate Bayou
Chocolate Bayou runs through Alvin and empties into West Galveston Bay. It's one of the most productive tidal bayous in Brazoria County for redfish and speckled trout, especially in fall and winter.
What to expect: Redfish (red drum) in the 18–28 inch range are common. Speckled trout (spotted seatrout) are abundant in cooler months. Flounder are present in fall during the annual migration.
Access: Multiple public access points along the bayou. The area near the FM 2917 bridge is a popular and productive spot.
Best times: Early morning and late afternoon. Fall (October–December) is prime season.
Bastrop Bay
Bastrop Bay is a shallow, productive bay in the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge area, about 20 miles southeast of Alvin. It's excellent for wading and kayak fishing.
What to expect: Redfish, speckled trout, and flounder. The shallow grass flats hold fish year-round, with fall being the best season.
Access: Launch from the boat ramp at the Brazoria NWR or from Quintana Beach County Park.
Best times: Fall and winter. The bay is very shallow — a kayak or shallow-draft boat is ideal.
West Galveston Bay
West Galveston Bay is one of the most productive bays on the Texas coast. It's about 35–40 miles from Alvin via Highway 6 and I-45.
What to expect: Redfish, speckled trout, flounder, black drum, and sheepshead. The bay has extensive grass flats, oyster reefs, and channel edges that hold fish year-round.
Access: Multiple boat ramps along the bay. Galveston Island State Park has good access for shore and kayak fishing.
Best times: Year-round, with fall and spring being peak seasons.
Surfside Beach and the Jetties
For surf fishing and jetty fishing, Surfside Beach and the Freeport jetties are about 40 miles south of Alvin.
What to expect: Redfish, speckled trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, and occasional tarpon in summer. The jetties are excellent for sheepshead year-round.
Access: Public beach access at Surfside. The Freeport jetties are accessible by boat or by walking from the parking area near the mouth of the Brazos River.
Best times: Spring and fall for trout and redfish. Summer for pompano and mackerel.
Freshwater Fishing
Chocolate Bayou (Upper Reaches)
The upper, freshwater portions of Chocolate Bayou hold largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie. Access is limited but productive for those willing to explore.
Brazoria Reservoir
Brazoria Reservoir, about 25 miles south of Alvin, is a good freshwater option for largemouth bass and catfish. It's a cooling reservoir for a power plant, which keeps water temperatures elevated and extends the fishing season.
Access: Public fishing access on the south side of the reservoir.
Lake Jackson Area Ponds and Sloughs
The Lake Jackson area has numerous freshwater ponds and sloughs that hold bass, catfish, and sunfish. Many are accessible from public roads.
Fishing Guides
If you want to maximize your time on the water, a local guide is worth the investment — especially for your first trip to unfamiliar water.
Several guides operate out of the Freeport and Galveston areas specializing in bay fishing for redfish and trout. Rates typically run $300–500 for a half-day trip for two people, including tackle and bait.
